Friendly Fires have announced that their trumpet player has died of a heart attack at the age of 27.

Richard Turner was swimming in an open-air pool in South London when he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was treated at the scene buy lifeguards and then paramedics, but despite their efforts, died later at King's College Hospital.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Eddy Hackett, Turner's best friend, said: "Richard is a very strong swimmer and the lifeguards could see something was wrong. They immediately pulled him out of the water and did their best to save his life.

"Three ambulances arrived within four minutes and they did everything they could."

Turner was a regular part of Friendly Fires extended band and had played with them for the last three years.

On their website, the band said that Turner was an "utterly exceptional musician" whose contributions to their live shows would be hugely missed.

They added: "He was an accomplished and admired composer.

"On tour he was much envied for his ability to fall asleep at will however uncomfortable the bus, plane car or train."
