Gary Clark Jr – a household name in 2012
Clark, 27, has been credited with bringing back an old-style of playing that was pioneered by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but with a modern-day twist.
He's even got the celebrity seal of approval, with Alicia Keys recently waxing lyrical about the guitarist.
"You know who is killing it? Gary Clark Jr," she said last month.
"Hurry up and Google [him] before you're late, because he is, like, so special."
Clark is seen as the kind of star who lives and breathes music, the electric guitar his way of engaging with the world.
"There's nothing like just sitting at the house and being by myself with the guitar and just going,” he told the Washington Post.
"Four hours will go by, and you'll be like, 'Whoa. I don't know what that was, but I went somewhere.'"
It's not an overnight success story even if it feels like it as Clark has been grafting hard for the last ten years – in 2001 he was heralded as someone to look out for and he's now making good on that claim.
