Gibson Les Paul 'vital to new Tom Petty album'
A vintage Gibson Les Paul guitar is taking centre-stage on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' latest album.
Mike Campbell, a member of the Heartbreakers and co-producer of new record Mojo, purchased the 1959 Les Paul a couple of years ago.
The musician told the Macombe Daily that it soon became apparent it would have an important role to play in the recording of Mojo after he fell in love with its sound.
"Tom said, 'Why don't we do a record around the sound of that guitar and put the guitar up-front more than we've done in the past and see what happens'," he explained.
Last month, musician Jeff Beck played two special shows in New York at Iridium Night Club commemorating the life, music and guitars of Les Paul.
