Gibson gives tips on guitar picks
The guitar manufacturer explains that although the pick might often be thought of as the most unsophisticated piece of gear for acoustic guitars, electric guitars and bass guitars, it is "a mighty device that needs to be reckoned with".
The tips are as follows. The size of the pick is important – rock and blues musicians tend to use standard-sized picks, whereas jazz musicians tend to go for smaller ones.
"Shape is important and the more traditional the better – V-shape is ideal. Don't be distracted by these oddballs," Gibson says.
The type of material a pick is made from is integral to the sound people are going for. For example, the harder a pick is, "the brighter and more biting the tone" that is produced.
This leads on to what impact the width and thickness a pick has on sound. A thin pick will enhance an acoustic guitar, while a thicker pick is ideal for electric guitars.
Gibson's chief executive officer revealed last month how his favourite electric guitar is the Firebird X.
