Girls encouraged to attend Norwich school of rock
Girls who want to try their hand at a range of musical instruments are being encouraged to turn up to a series of sessions being run in Norwich.
The Girls R Loud scheme has been previously been operating on a monthly basis in the city, but a new ten-week series of Saturday lessons has just been launched.
Run by an all-female team of musicians, youngsters aged between 11 and 17 are encouraged to try out different instruments, play a variety of musical styles and write their own songs, reports the Norwich Evening News.
Cath Evans, a drummer who is one of the course leaders, explained that the initiative was set up in 2008 to encourage more girls to get into music.
"We wanted to give girls a space without some of the ego you can get with other male-dominated schools and give them a real confidence-boosting enjoyable fun experience," she said.
Earlier this month, the government announced an independent review which will examine how more children can be encouraged to learn a musical instrument is to be conducted.
