Glastonbury 2013 may get electronic wristbands

Next year's Glastonbury Festival might see the introduction of electronic wristbands.
Electric wristbands may feature in 2013
Michael Eavis is looking to bring Glastonbury up-to-date next year by introducing microchipped wristbands in a bid to beat fraudulent behaviour.

The classic music festival, which is not taking place this year to properly let the land heal, is looking to get with the digital age as it modernises its activities and organisation.

Eavis, who founded the festival in 1970, told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat that the idea appealed to him because it seemed like a much better system than the one they currently have.

The wristbands could also be used to pay for goods on site as they are able to be loaded with cash, helping reduce theft and the chance of losing money.

"All the commercial implications of the chip are slightly worrying aren't they?" he told the news provider.

"I don't want to take people into a land they don't want to go into. And using information about people, I wouldn't be happy about that."

This system has already been piloted successfully in the Netherlands, at the Eurosonic Noorderslag Festival.

Eavis recently revealed that he had pretty much sorted out the headline acts for next year's festival, which is projected to be one of the biggest yet.
