Glastonbury festival is getting a 21st century makeover with news that it will start providing washing machines for attendees from 2013 onwards.

The annual festival, which is known for being a typically muddy affair, has decided enough is enough with the dirt – clean Glastonbury is the way forward.

Glastonbury's operations director, Melvin Benn, told the Sun: "Older fans are getting far more demanding and we have to respond.

"That means better toilets and now washing machine facilities."

The festival is taking a brief hiatus next year to allow the site to recover as revellers have worn the grass to its very core.

Which means 2013 is going to be one of the biggest Glastonbury events ever. This summer, festival founder Michael Eavis said: "We can't wait for 2013 .We love it. I've never seen so many people enjoying themselves, it was fantastic, even with the [rainy] conditions. We can't wait to do it again.

"We've already got three headliners lined up for 2013. I know who they all are, but I'm not going to go into details about that."
