Google has launched a new online music service

Google has announced to the world a new online music service.
Great deals on musical instruments

Google launched its new online music service yesterday in San Francisco, entering into a fiercely competitive industry dominated by Apple's iTunes and Amazon Cloud.

The internet giant unveiled Music Beta by Google at a conference for software developers yesterday.

The service allows users store their collection of music online and they can access it remotely from a number of devices.

This cloud-based music service can also be accessed via a smartphone that runs the company's Android operating system and up to 20,000 songs can be uploaded.

Currently in beta, it will be free to those lucky enough to get an invitation to access it, although it currently doesn't offer users the ability to download, share or purchase music.

This is because key figures within the organisation are currently negotiating deals with major record labels over lucrative music licensing agreements.

Jamie Rosenberg, director of digital content for Google Android, told the New York Times: “A couple of major labels were not as collaborative and frankly were demanding a set of business terms that were unreasonable and did not allow us to build a product or a business on a sustainable basis."

The company was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and began life as a search engine. It has since expanded its operations to include, among others, a much used web mapping service, email, online browsing and photo editing.
