Google honours Les Paul with special Google Doodle
Google has honoured one of the innovators of the guitar with a special birthday Google Doodle today.
Les Paul, who would have been 96 today, was instrumental in developing the music instrument, especially the solid-bodied guitar, which went on to become a popular rock 'n' roll standard.
It was the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar that cemented his place in history, fast becoming one of the most iconic guitar types in the world, along with, for example, the Fender Telecaster and the Fender Stratocaster.
A Google spokesman said that they were attempting to recreate the experience of jamming with friends and making music.
The spokesman added: "For the next 24 hours on the Google homepage, you’ll find an interactive, playable logo inspired by the guitar developed by the rock and roll Hall of Fame inductee that made the sound of rock and roll possible."
Although he was responsible for laying the foundations of rock and roll, Les Paul himself was a keen jazz guitarist and enthusiast.
Born in Wisconsin, Les Paul started off playing the harmonica before moving onto the characteristically American banjo.
He finally fell in love with the guitar, although it was his frustration with the electric guitars of the 30s that led him down the road of becoming an inventor.
His proper name was Lester William Polsfuss.
