Government pledges £82.5m to music education following Henley Report
The government has announced it will spend £82.5 million on encouraging better music education in the UK.
Michael Gove, secretary of state for education, made the announcement following the publication of the Henley Report, which made 36 recommendations after conducting a review of the topic.
The money from the government will be spent on encouraging children of all ages and abilities to pick up musical instruments, as well as getting a larger number of top music graduates into the teaching profession.
"Music has the power to touch the soul. It is a universal language understood by people of every culture and it gives us all the chance to be transported by beauty," said Mr Gove.
He added that it is important youngsters from every walk of life have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.
Darren Henley, the man who conducted the review and the managing director of Classic FM, stated that he hopes to see an education system in place which will allow every child to achieve their "full musical potential".
Julian Lloyd Webber has praised the government for its actions, explaining that he applauds its efforts to "bring music to every child".
