A sculpture honouring the memory of electric guitar legend Kurt Cobain is to be unveiled in Aberdeen, Washington.

The lead singer of Nirvana is to be immortalised beside a park that was inspired by him and a bridge he used to visit as a youngster, the Daily World reports.

It will be a large concrete guitar and is to be unveiled on April 5th, which will mark the 17th anniversary of his death.

Kim and Lora Malakoff are the designers behind the scheme, with the latter observing she moved to the area right after Cobain's suicide.

"I was always surprised there was nothing here to memorialise him. I had always hoped there would be. As one generation goes and another takes over, things change. That's what happened here with Kurt Cobain," she told the news provider.

Nirvana rose to prominence in the early 90s with the release of studio album Nevermind, which saw Cobain sing, Dave Grohl behind the drum kit and Krist Novoselic playing bass guitar.

Songs such as Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are introduced them to a mass audience.

Indeed, the latter song title has become the unofficial slogan of Aberdeen.
