Guitarists fall short in world record attempt
A world record attempt to create the biggest ever guitar ensemble has ended in failure.
Musicians in Toronto, Canada gathered yesterday to outdo the record which was set in 2007, when more than 1,800 guitarists performed a version of Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.
However, the number of people who participated in this latest effort was slightly lower, which means they failed to break the record.
All the gathered guitarists - some 1,623 people - united to play a rendition of Helpless by Neil Young.
The record attempt was carried out as part of Torontos Luminato festival, with the song of choice decided upon in an online poll.
Neil Youngs classic hit won over other famous songs including Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and Takin' Care of Business by Bachman Turner Overdrive.
The Weight by The Band and Cuts Like A Knife were also in the running.
Despite their failure this time round, residents of the city will try to break another record next month, when they attempt to gather the largest ever group of saxophonists to play the Canadian national anthem.
