Harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt has died
Leonhardt, a supremely talented musician and scholar, who was also an organist and keyboard soloist, passed away at his home in Amsterdam.
An assiduous practitioner, he would, for example revisit and rerecord Bach's music, always looking to tighten the quality of production.
Leonhardt came to music early, studying the piano from the age of six, before adding the cello to his repertoire at the age of ten.
It was when he was a teenager he found his calling as a musician – his parents bought him a harpsichord, after which he made it his instrument of choice.
His career soon blossomed and he began recording music in the 1950s, Vienna the backdrop to this fruitful time.
He would go on to visit and record in the US as well as in other parts of Europe.
Leonhardt is survived by his wife Marie, herself a respected baroque violinist, and three daughters.
