Higher-spec pickups 'can release electric guitar's hidden potential'

Changing the pickups on an electric guitar can make a considerable difference to its sound, it has been advised.

For musicians wanting to get the most out of their electric guitar, investing in some high-specification pickups may be an excellent idea.

This is the opinion of Gibson.com columnist Peter Hodgson, who explained that beginners often start off with a fairly basic electric guitar before moving on to a more expensive model as they improve their playing standard.

He pointed out that cheaper guitars will come with perfectly functional pickups, but ones that may not have the "character or dimensionality" a player craves.

"Spend a few bucks on some higher-spec pickups, though and you'll instantly unleash the hidden potential of your guitar's innate sound," Mr Hodgson advised those musicians who want to continue using their first instrument rather than replacing it.

Last month, Mr Hodgson advised musicians planning to give their electric guitar a clean to ensure they use the right solution for their specific instrument and avoid furniture polish.
