Honorary doctorate for famed guitar player
Johnny Marr has no-doubt inspired many music instrument fans to pick up the guitar because of his well-known work with the instrument.
He is the man who played guitar with The Smiths – the famous Manchester band that was fronted by singer Morrissey.
Marr has taken on visiting professor duties at the uni awarding him his doctorate – the University of Salford – for some time.
The Smiths' albums include The Queen Is Dead, Meat Is Murder and Strangeways Here We Come. Alongside Marr and Morrissey, the band also featured Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke.
The '80's group's songs, including This Charming Man, Panic, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and Shopkeepers of the World Unite, remain popular to this day.
Their track Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want was featured, in a covered version, in a John Lewis advert last Christmas, which attracted much attention.
"I'm very pleased to be given an honorary degree by Salford University. I've enjoyed working with the students in my capacity as visiting professor and hopefully we can find some more opportunities for creative work in the future," Marr has commented.
