Hot weather brings out organ restorers to retune music instruments

The hot weather is creating a demand for organ restorers to retune music instruments across the UK

While many people will be enjoying the warm weather with a visit to the park or a nice cool drink, a group of organ restorers will be hard at work retuning music instruments up and down churches in the UK.

A six-man team of specialists from Principal Pipe Organs are finding that they are in demand this season as rising temperatures are leading to organs "falling out of tune", reported the Yorkshire Post.

Geoffrey Coffin, who runs the York-based company with his wife Pam, is an expert in pipe organs. Not only has he been working with the music instrument for "the best part" of his life, he has also worked on important commissions like restoring York Minister's historic organ.

Speaking to the newspaper, he said: "At this time of year we are working around the countryside as far away as Scotland and the south of England. We have also been doing a lot of work around North Yorkshire."

Organs usually require retuning twice a year in winter and spring as the fluctuating temperatures affect the pipes that make up the organ.

For hundreds of years the organ was mainly confined to churches but by the late 19th and early 20th century crossed-over into concert halls, music venues, cinemas and various places of entertainment.
