Indie labels are thriving, says HMV
Electric guitar players, drummers and pianists could be in for a good yeat after music retailer HMV commended the healthy state of the British music industry in 2009.
According to the company, this is most apparent in the strong performances of artists signed to independent record labels.
John Hirst, rock and pop manager at HMV, said: "It's encouraging to see indie labels doing so well, which reflects on the vibrant state of our music right now."
The comments came after a poll of music critics by HMV saw Merriweather Post Pavillion by psychedelic indie band Animal Collective named as the album of the year.
Mr Hirst said the record sounds like nothing else that is currently available and is notching up strong sales after being promoted by word of mouth.
Florence and the Machine, who came third in the BBC's Sound of 2009 new music list, were also rated highly in the poll, along with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear.Posted on 29 Dec 2009 23:00 to category : Music News
