Introducing the printable violin
EOS, a German company that specialises in 3D printing technologies, worked closely with a professional violin maker in a project that could revolutionise the way violins are created.
Speaking to wired, an EOS spokesperson said: "The violin was a technology exercise. We wanted to test what we can achieve with our technology, which is ideally suited for complex structures.
"This is why we chose a complex musical instrument which normally is being made in a very traditional way and with a traditional material – wood."
All that said, the violin was not entirely printed; the strings and pegbox for example, were added after the violin had taken shape.
3D printing works by building up objects layer by layer through sophisticated computers.
Hugh Midford, a keen amateur violin player, took his music instrument with him to play on top of the Himalayas, reported Henley Standard.
