Ireland is to pay tribute to the late electric guitar player Rory Gallagher by unveiling a bronze sculpture in his memory.

Gallagher first rose to prominence in Taste before going solo and establishing himself as one of the rock genre's finest guitarists.

With his famous battered Fender Stratocaster, he released a string of classic LPs, including Tattoo, Calling Card and Against the Grain.

However, the Irish musician died in June 1995 following a liver transplant.

A special monument in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, is being unveiled this week to honour his life and work.

Fans of Gallagher are being invited to attend tomorrow's event, which also includes live music from Moonchild and Johnny Gallagher.

The guitar player's brother Donal Gallagher will be at the unveiling, along with the Mayor of County Donegal and the Lord Mayor of Cork City.

Rory Gallagher has been cited as an inspiration by many leading musicians over the years, including Queen guitarist Brian May.
