James Rhodes: Classical music should be more accessible

Piano player James Rhodes has spoken about his desire to break down the barrier between performers and the audience in the world of classical music.

Piano player James Rhodes has said that one of his goals is to make classical music more accessible to the masses.

Speaking to the Observer, Rhodes explained that he is against the term "classical music" as he believes it makes the genre seem too elitist to many people.

The pianist stated while the music should be viewed in a serious manner, the barriers around performing should be broken down.

"You can hang out afterwards and have a drink with the audience, as opposed to being some guy who sits up on stage and doesn't communicate at all other than playing the piano," he observed.

Rhodes has recently signed a six-album contract with Warner Bros, with debut record from the deal Bullets and Lullabies reaching the top of the iTunes classical chart in December.

The musician is also the presenter of Sky Arts TV show Piano Man, in which he plays arrangements from his favourite composers.

According to Warner Bros, Rhodes's prolific use of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook helped to bring him to their attention, with the musician also receiving the backing of comedian and actor Stephen Fry on the former website.
