Jazz pianist's breakthrough at 85
Boyd Lee Dunlop started practising on a wrecked piano that had been left out on the streets of New York in the 30s, managing to perfect his skills even though half the keys were out of order.
It was only when Dunlop moved into a nursing home that everything fell into place – he came across another run-down piano.
A chance encounter with a photographer changed everything.
Brendan Brannon was keen to shoot some snaps at the home, but after hearing Dunlop play, talked to some contacts and engineered a recording.
"Boyd was sitting down in the waiting area also, and we struck up a conversation really quickly," Mr Bannon told NPR Music.
"He told me about his piano playing and invited me down to the cafeteria to listen to him play. I looked at the piano, and there were keys broken off of it ... It didn't look well. But Boyd was wrestling some beautiful sounds out of it."
Dunlop's debut album is entitled Boyd's Blues.
