Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson took up flute because Eric Clapton was "too good on guitar".

He explained why he took up the flute in an exclusive clip from Neil McCormick's Needle Time.

Jethro Tull are renowned for their progressive music accentuated with the flute playing of frontman Ian Anderson but it could have been much different.

In an exclusive clip from Neil McCormick's Needle Times, Anderson explains that Eric Clapton was the biggest influence on him taking up the flute, the Telegraph reports.

The Jethro Tull musician explains that Clapton was simply too good on the guitar which disheartened the then lead guitarist of a blues group that would go on to form the famous '60s band.

Anderson saw the true prowess of Clapton on the guitar when he was playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

"You just knew this guy [Clapton] was way ahead of everybody else, me included. And also we were hearing rumours of these other gunslinger guitar people like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Richie Blackmore. I was fumbling around, relatively speaking," Anderson explains.
