Jimmy Page: Improvising guitar solos on stage was great
Led Zeppelin's concerts would sometimes last up to three hours at a time, which led to the band members constantly trying to come up with new takes on their songs.
Speaking to the Times, Page said his solos in particular offered plenty of scope for improvisation.
"This whole musical entity locked together and it would just sort of mutate over the course of the concert," he commented.
"It was just marvellous."
Page noted that while some of the improvisations could be absolutely terrific, he would occasionally hit a wrong note by accident.
However, he said the band was so tight around this period that his fellow musicians would go with the mistake and work a new improvisation around that.
Page added that he believes it is a shame Led Zeppelin did not follow their 2007 reunion gig with more live performances.
Frontman Robert Plant has ruled out a reformation in the immediate future, as he is currently collaborating with Alison Krauss.Posted on 8 Jan 2010 16:00 to category : Instruments News
