Johnny Thirkell Thanks sE Electronics 'Fancy Mic'
He commented, "I'm a trumpet player. I know nothing about EQs and ribbons and bows. However, what I do know is that, after 20 years of touring with everyone from Bon Jovi to Jamiroquai, I have never had such a great trumpet sound come out of that black box on the floor as what I get since we started using that fancy mic with the radiator around it...finally the sound that comes out of the horn, comes out of the monitor!"
The fancy mic is the Se Electronics VR2 Voodoo Ribbon Mic, a state of the art mic with new technology allowing the capture of frequencies from 20Hz to 20KHz, giving open and natural capture of Johnny's brass.
Coupled with the sE IRF Instrument Reflexion Filter, the mic is also isolated from any room noise or unwanted interference.
Although he claims not to know about "EQs, ribbons and bows," Johnny Thirkell certainly knows about music, having worked with artists including The Beatles, Level 42, George Michael, UB40, Status Quo, Jools Holland, Queen, Eric Clapton and Tom Jones.
Through the 80s and early 90s he was on at least one album in the UK charts continuously for over 13 years and was the first person to be inducted into the Musician's Union Hall of Fame.
If you'd like to read more about Johnny's life on tour including when he was shot at, arrested, deported from the US (twice), set fire to a hotel, scored a goal at Wembley and was kidnapped by the Japanese mafia, check out Johnny Thirkell's blog!
