Karl Lagerfeld calls Adele fat
The fashion designer, known for his kooky sartorial style, told Metro New York that he liked Adele and Florence Welch – of Florence and the Machine – as singers, describing the former as "the thing of the moment."
He then added: "She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
Outraged fans of Adele took to Twitter to vent their fury at Lagerfeld's insensitive comments, which could impact on his career in the fashion industry.
The musician Christa Black said: "I'm kinda disgusted that Karl Lagerfeld called Adele 'too fat.' Makes me not want to buy his clothes. Ever."
Meanwhile, co-host of the US Today show added: "Fash designer Karl Lagerfeld reducing super talented, exquisitely thoughtful & intelligent Adele to "fat" is a reminder of battle women face."
Adele is currently getting herself fit and ready for her comeback performance at the Brits and the Grammy Awards, after a long battle with various throat illnesses curbed her ability to sing live for much of 2011.
