An ITV news presenter has spoken about the pleasure you can get from playing the violin.

Katie Derham learnt to play the violin as a child and picked it up again for Sky Arts television show First Love, which encourages people who have given up on a musical instrument to see if they can rediscover their passion for it.

Speaking to the Independent, Ms Derham said of the violin: "Played well, it can be brilliant and exciting, yet warm, mellifluous and truly expressive."

While it took her a considerable amount of practice to remaster the instrument, she eventually managed to get her playing up to a good standard and has now been asked to join a local orchestra.

"Most satisfyingly, I feel I've got an important bit of myself back," Ms Derham explained of the experience.

Last month, the Daily Mail reported that An Education star Carey Mulligan is to learn the violin for her lead role in forthcoming film On Chesil Beach.
