Labour spent thousands on African drum lessons

It has been revealed the Labour government spent thousands of pounds helping civil servants learn how to play African drums.
Great deals on musical instruments

Thousands of pounds worth of taxpayers' money was spent on Africa drum lessons for civil servants under Labour.

It was revealed the Foreign Office had sent its workers on teambuilding activities that had staff embracing various music instruments that created a percussion sound.

This included African drums, dustbins, broom handles and plastic tubs.

Between 2006 and 2010 this cost taxpayers an astonishing £38,636.40.

The Tories, whose tenure has been characterised by massive public cuts and an "age of austerity", were quick to launch into an attack.

Charlie Elphicke, a conservative backbench MP, said: "Under Labour, diplomats spent tens of thousands on away days and games, including banging on dustbins and drums.

"It is no surprise that Labour maxed out on the nation’s credit card when they allowed wasteful spending like this.

He added the current coalition government on the other hand was finding sensible savings to end what he described as Labour's "culture of secrecy and waste".
