Latin Percussion Arrives at Gear4music!
The Latin Percussion story began in 1956 as a young mechanical engineer, Martin Cohen, visited the famous Birdland jazz club in New York.
Cohen soon became a regular at the Monday night jam nights, inspired by the percussionists. He soon wanted his own set of bongos, but high-quality Latin instruments were hard to find due to trade bans between America and Cuba.
With no previous knowledge of wood or metal-work, Cohen's first set of bongos was a crude prototype, but after a little practice he began delivering bongos and cowbells to musicians and getting feedback on his creations.
Martin Cohen then began creating instruments for prominent television musicians of the day and he won acceptance in the Latin community. Tito Puente called him a 'lousy dancer' but said "he was always consulting with us, trying to do the right thing."
In 1964, Cohen officially started Latin Percussion. Today, he still travels to clubs around the world talking to musicians and gathering feedback.
This has lead to LP being trusted and played by musicans such as Steve Gadd, Peter Erskine and Chris Pennie, providing shakers, snares, cowbells and cajons to those who also have a passion for Latin music... including you.
