Youngsters could enjoy various health benefits if they learn to play the guitar or keyboard, an expert has said.

According to Lucetta Johnson of the Soundbite Lunchtime Performance Project, learning a musical instrument can improve a person's brain functions.

Speaking to the Bath Chronicle, she noted that picking up an instrument could also be a good way of boosting self-esteem and confidence.

Ms Johnson said this could then impact positively on other areas of people's lives.

"Research has shown that music can improve communication [and] reduce stress and anxiety," she commented.

Ms Johnson is the organiser of the Soundbite Lunchtime Project, which involves musicians performing recitals at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Patients will be given the chance to have a go at instruments such as clarinets, saxophones and guitars themselves.

This comes after the Educational Institute of Scotland stated that learning a musical instrument can be especially good for children, as it can boost their overall personal development and teach them to work individually and in groups.
