Legendary venue is saved
A music venue that has become famous for showcasing aspiring electric guitar players, bassists and drummers has won a last-minute reprieve.
The Halfmoon in Putney, which provided an early platform for acts such as The Rolling Stones and U2, has been putting on bands since 1963 but had been due to close its doors at the end of the month and turned into a gastro-pub.
However, a campaign from across the music industry and the public at large has led to its owner Young's reconsidering its position and opting instead to keep the venue open.
James Harris, the current tenant at the Halfmoon, said: "This was never just about jobs, but about a part of our music heritage.
"We still face tough times ahead but at least we can move forward now."
The Halfmoon was threatened with closure after rising rates and alcohol duty led to the venue falling into financial difficulties.
