Listen To The World's First Computer Generated Music

Alan Turing
Alan Turing
Alan Turing, the famous computer scientist who helped overturn the tide of the second world war by breaking the Nazi's Enigma code, was also one of the worlds leading musical innovators. He helped to create music on one of the modern day synthesizers early antecedents and thus contributed to the innovation of much of todays modern music.

Over 65 years ago, the sound was recorded on the complex apparatus to the BBC outside-broadcast unit situated at the Computing Machine Laboratory in Manchester England. Researchers from the University of Cantebury recently referenced the implications of Turing's groundbreaking experiment at the time, stating that his "Pioneering work in the late 1940's on transforming the computer into a musical instrument has been largely overlooked. "

Upon studying the device, the researchers came upon a 12-inch acetate disc which held the music. Unfortunately, the audio had been distorted. Through intricate and delicate electronic craftmanship, this was then altered so that the listener could now hear the intended and authentic sound of Turing's computer as he originally intended it to sound.
