Live Aid 'one of the biggest music events of recent times'
Live Aid was the one of the most important musical events to occur in the last 30 years, according to a new survey by Music Choice.
The 1985 event, which was opened by Fender Telecaster-toting rockers Status Quo, came second in the poll after the emergence of internet downloading.
Concerts were staged at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia to raise money for those hit by the famine in Ethiopia.
Organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the bill included a succession of big names including U2, Queen, Paul McCartney and David Bowie.
"The fact that Live Aid has proved so influential to so many people even after all this time is certainly an indication of how much we value the heritage of that music," said Kevin Spector of Music Choice.
This comes 25 years after the release of the Band Aid single Do They Know It's Christmas Time.
Geldof, who made his name in The Boomtown Rats, was also behind a new version of the song in 2004, as well as the subsequent Live 8 event in Hyde Park and Philadelphia.Posted on 7 Dec 2009 14:00 to category : Music News
