Live Music Act could be extended 500-capacity venues
If approved, it will mean that venues which have a capacity up to 500 will be exempt from licensing requirements, an increase on the current limit of 200 in place at the moment.
The move has followed a consultation from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport which looked into entertainment deregulation and this new piece of legislation has been put forward.
Aspects of the conclusions also included the decision to treat recorded music in the same way as live music in venues between the hours of 08:00 and 23:00, again with an audience of 500.
Phil Little, from The Live Music Forum, told Music Week: "Without an improvement in audience attendance across the board we have an awful long way to go to match the vibrance of live music performance in previous decades."
Many well-known bands across the UK tend to use smaller venues as warm-up to larger shows and having a capacity of 500 could bring in extra revenue for these facilities.
