Making Music Report Results Revealed by ABRSM
The ABRSM Making Music report intended to offer insights into how music is taught and played in the UK. The first Making Music survey was published nearly 20 years ago, but there hasn't been a new one for 14 years.

As well as the ABRSM, the exam board for the Royal Schools of Music, Organisations involved in making the report were Arts Council England, Ofsted, the Musician's Union and the Music Education Council, as well as many teaching bodies.

The statistics found that 69% of children currently play an instrument, with 16% who used to play and 15% who have never played an instrument. Compared with adult learners, only 34% currently play, 40% used to play and 26% of adults have never played an instrument (that's 13.1 million people in the UK!)

Although there's been an increase in the number of children picking up an instrument, it looks as if none-formal ways of learning are becoming more popular, with 77% of child learners who have never taken a music exam.

The top instrument for children aged 5-17 to play is the keyboard, followed by the piano, recorder, classical guitar and drums.

The survey found that 64% of music teachers find that children don't continue lessons because of financial barriers - either the cost of instruments or the cost of lessons. However, 39% of teachers have said their student numbers have increased in the last 5 years.

20% of 5-17 year olds make music using apps on their smartphone or tablet, and 40% make music for fun outside of school.

The Making Music report says that "the level of engagement in the UK with music learning is impressive." You can read the full report here.
