Man creates self-tuning piano

A Kansas City man has developed a piano that tunes itself.
Who needs a tuner these days?
An engineer has developed a self-tuning piano, heralding a seminal moment in the history of the musical instrument.

Don A Gilmore, a classically-trained pianist from Kansas City, who is also an engineer, has spent a good number of years working out a system to do what many thought was impossible.

As Gizmag noted, the piano is an extremely complex instrument, one that has more than 200 strings that govern 88 keys.

Trying to develop a single system that allows all of this to be tuned to perfection has therefore been tremendously challenging.

However, it was a challenge Mr Gilmore rose to in spectacular form, developing a thermal system that astonishingly tunes the piano in just under a minute.

"I was considering wild ideas about forcing electricity at a given frequency through the piano strings, wondering if it might have any effect on the pitch," he told the online news provider.

"I immediately went to my lab and hooked up a bench-top DC power supply to a string on an electric guitar that I had. I found that by turning the dial on the power supply I could easily control the pitch of the string."

In related news, Peavey recently developed the AT-200, a self-tuning electric guitar.
