Master violinist Israel Baker has died
Baker, who was especially celebrated for his work as concertmaster for the orchestra that produced the soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcock's seminal horror movie Psycho, died peacefully in his sleep on Christmas Day.
The soundtrack to the film was credited with helping bring Hitchcock's suspense thriller alive with its chilling use of violins to heighten the drama.
Born in Chicago, Baker was the youngest child of four to Russian immigrants who had come to the US to find a better life in the early 20th century.
It was in this city that his career as a violin player began to ferment and he soon became a firm favourite of the classical music circuit, highly sought after.
He worked for Paramount Pictures, Capitol Records and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra as well as producing notable pieces of work with luminaries like Andre Previn, John Williams, Franz Waxman and John Barry.
A modest man, the Los Angeles Times reported that Baker once discussed stock market tips with one of his fellow orchestra members during a cello solo.
His is survived by his wife Imelda, three daughters and five grandchildren.
