McCartney: I was told to retire a 50
The Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has revealed that he was told to retire when he reached 50.
McCartney said that one of the "old guys" who he used to have as a manager said that with his big 50th knocking around the corner, the acoustic guitar player who has penned such classics like Penny Lane and Hey Jude, should consider packing it all in.
He very nearly did as well.
In a special issue of the music magazine Mojo celebrating the music of the singer-songwriter, McCartney said he could understand what his manager was saying to him.
But, and lucky for the music world, the 69-year-old star stuck to his guns.
He told the magazine: "If I'm really enjoying this, why retire? So I decided against it, and got rid of him.
"I wonder what he thinks today. Perhaps that he was right, but hopefully not."
Since he turned 50, he has gone on to produce 11 more hit albums, toured the world, been active in the industry and headline Glastonbury Festival in 2004.
In short, it has been nothing short of a marvellous time in the twilight of his career as a professional musician.
He added that fans often remarked to him that he worked hard, a myth he was quick to dispel.
"We don't work hard, we play music - we don't work music."
