They have swapped their trademark guitars for a pen and ink: two of the blokes from rock-themed boy band McFly are set to produce a book for young kids, it has been reported.

The festive-themed title will feature an infant dinosaur, publisher Random House has said.

"Dougie and I have been writing songs together for nine years now and so we approached writing this book in the same way that we write our lyrics," singer Tom Fletcher said of his co-author Dougie Poynter.

"We have always worked very visually, whether we are writing a book, song, or coming up with ideas for album art or our next tour stage design, we always end up in bookshops searching for inspiration," he added.

Tom said that an interest in Christmas on his part and reptiles on Dougie's provided the starting point for the title, which is set to be released this autumn.

"A shared obsession with poop" was also involved, he said. Appropriately enough, the pair's book is called The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas.

"This is a story with for the whole family and one that will really make small boys howl with glee," said publisher Fiona Macmillan.

Previous celebrity authors include Ozzy Obourne's wife Sharon Osbourne, model Katie Price and 'Mysterious Girl' singer Peter Andre.
