Megaupload.com shut down by US authorities
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department have charged seven people with violating piracy laws.
The New York Times reported that the move comes only a day after Wikipedia and other notable online-based organisations protested against a new anti-piracy law that is been proposed in the US.
According to prosecutors, the file-sharing website has cost artists, film-makers and other creative individuals and businesses $500 million (£320 million) in lost revenue.
"This action is amongst the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime," the FBI said in a statement.
Megaupload.com also issued a statement ahead of the website being shut down by the authorities.
"The fact is that the vast majority of Mega's internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay," it read.
"If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch."
