Mercury Music Prize 2014 Shortlist Announced
The Chair of Judges, Simon Frith, says the list "confirms that these are fascinating times for UK music".

The emphasis this year seems to on artists who span different genres on one record, whether they're household names trying new styles like Damon Albarn and Bombay Bicycle Club, or rising stars like Kate Tempest, whose album Everybody Down fuses performance poetry with hip hop.

There are still guitar bands there though, with two-piece Royal Blood and solo artist Anna Calvi.

The shortlist includes 7 debut albums, including Total Strife Forever from East India Youth and Nick Mulvey's First Mind. Mulvey was nominated for the prize in 2008 as part of the band Portico Quintet.

Favourites to win are Royal Blood and Damon Albarn, although we've been surprised in the past and we could see newcomer FKA Twigs take the prize with her debut LP1.

See the full list:

  • Anna Calvi - One Breath
  • Bombay Bicycle Club - So Long, See You Tomorrow
  • Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots
  • East India Youth - Total Strife Forever
