The Ministry of Sound nightclub could face closure if a new apartment block is built opposite.

The dance music superclub has started a petition against the development of a residential tower opposite their premises and offices in Southwark, London - where they have been based for 18 years.

Management at the club released a statement blasting Oakmayne, the property developers behind the 369 new apartments, saying they do not support the local community.

It reads: "When Oakmayne told us that 'nightclubs come and go', we were horrified. Ministry of Sound is not just any nightclub; it's the most famous nightclub in the world and the heart of a global entertainment business.

"These developers have cut corners at every stage and counter to their claims, they do not have the best interests of the local community at heart. We must do everything in our power to save our club and our business."

The global Ministry Of Sound brand makes around £80 million a year and the nightclub is a tourist attraction for visitors around the world.

A Chairman for the Oakmayne Group countered, however, sating the company has worked "extensively" with the nightclub and the local council to ensure the new block and the club can co-exist - including offering £400,000 to help further soundproof the venue. This would however mean the venue shutting its doors for a number of months.

A consultation period on the tower block ends in March and a decision will be made later in the year.
