Ministry of Sound prevents tower block development from going ahead
Oakmayne's plan to develop a 41-storey building near the music venue was rejected by Southwark Council's planning committee.
The developers, whose development would have seen 255 flats go up near the Ministry of Sound venue, have said they will appeal.
Christopher Allen, chairman of Oakmayne, said: "We are both confused and bitterly disappointed by the planning committee's decision, which was made against their own officer recommendations and the weight of expert evidence in support of Eileen House."
Ministry of Sound was against the idea as it believed the development threatened its very existence, arguing that it was very likely that residents in the new development would have complained about the noise.
Over 25,000 people signed a petition against the development.
Lohan Presencer, chief executive officer Ministry of Sound, said: "I'm delighted that the jobs of the 200 people we employ at our headquarters in Elephant & Castle have been saved. We do some great community work and its fantastic that we get the chance to be beating heart of Southwark."
