More guitars being bought by girls
The success of female musicians such as the late Amy Winehouse and chart-topper Adele is encouraging more girls to buy guitars, according to latest sales figures.
Data from the Music Industries Association highlighted that 835,000 of the music instruments were sold in 2010, compared with 450,000 in 1998, with females increasingly likely to make a purchase, reports Financial News.
The association's chief executive Paul McManus said: “It’s a combination of factors, there are some great female role models, and the number of female singer songwriters in the last few years has gone off the clock.
“You just have to look at someone like Adele for an example of that."
He added that it is not the case that men are playing the guitar less, just than it has become a more attractive option for women too.
The data also highlighted that acoustic guitars are proving more popular than electric models, suggesting people are being inspired by singer-songwriters such as Laura Marling than heavy rock heroes such as Slash.
This week it was reported that female solo artists are dominating the charts, with nine of the ten bestselling albums being from such artists.
Amy Winehouse, Beyonce and Adele are all in the top ten, as well as offerings from Lady Gaga, classical artist Laura Wright and jazz singer Caro Emerald.
