More women 'picking up violins'
More women are learning to play the violin, it has been suggested.
According to an article in the Scotsman, the current popularity of the musical instrument among ladies is shown by the fact that seven of the eight finalists in the Glenfiddich Fiddle Championships are women in their early 20s.
The newspaper stated that famous female violinists such as Vanessa Mae and Nicola Benedetti may have contributed to this trend occurring in recent years.
"While Mae made the violin cool again by exploring techno music, Benedetti has brought it into the mainstream with her chart-topping albums," said the report.
Earlier this month, Benedetti praised the Big Noise project, an initiative which encourages more children to pick up musical instruments.
She attended the Big Noise orchestra's first performance and told the Herald that she was very impressed with the standard of the children's playing, especially as some had only been playing their instruments for a week.
