Motion-capture used to capture piano playing

Motion-capture technology is being used to capture the way pianists play the piano.
How does a piano player move their fingers?
Researchers at Southampton University are looking at new ways of understanding how a piano is played.

The team is trialling infra-red motion-capture technology to capture and track the way a pianist's hands and fingers move around the musical instrument.

It is hoped that this novel approach will help the researchers understand the way in which hand posture impacts on the way music is generated on a piano.

"It's fascinating to watch pianists' hands," Professor David Owen Norris told the BBC.

"Audiences always want to see exactly what's going on with those flashing fingers and pianists look at hands too."

He added that the information gained from the experiment would help them compare what different pianists do with their fingers, hands and wrists.

In principle, the technique used to capture the motion of a pianist's hands is similar to that used to create special effects in the movie business.

Tiny little sensors are attached to key areas of the hand, notably the joints, which are then picked up by a sophisticated computer programme.

"It won't mean a sea change in the teaching of piano, but every additional light you can shine on the relationship between your eyes and your hands helps," Prof Norris added.
