Muddy Waters slide guitar sound explained

Guitar expert Ted Drozdowski has explained how musicians looking to recreate the famous slide guitar sound of blues pioneer Muddy Waters can go about the job.

In his latest feature for the Gibson website, the writer states that the best place to start is with recreating Waters' tone and for this players need to purchase a small metal slide, such as the ones offered by Dunlop.

In addition, players will "need a solid body guitar with good sustain [and] an amp with enough hairy distortion to get into the right tonal zone".

During his career, Waters - who placed 17th in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest artists of all time - played a number of solid body electric guitars, most notably a GibsonLes Paul and a Fender Telecaster.

Once his set-up has been replicated, technique is the next step to recreating Waters' sound, Mr Drozdowski said.

He pointed out that the guitarist was a fan of playing single notes and finger-picking, but suggested that capturing his "truly extreme" slide vibrato techniques may be difficult.
