The 2004 Glastonbury Festival headline performance from Brit rockers Muse has come in at number one in a NME poll.

The band, who are known for their roaring electric guitar influenced melodies, beat off stiff competition from some of the greatest musicians in the world including the experimental Radiohead, The Beatles legend Paul McCartney, David Bowie and piano player Stevie Wonder.

The magazine launched an online poll to find out what the music-loving public thought were the classic performances of Glastonbury throughout its history.

It was met with an unprecedented response with 20,000 people casting their votes in the first 24 hours alone.

Matt Bellamy, the band's frontman, told the magazine at the time, that it was one of the best gigs the band ever done.

He said: "It was definitely the biggest gig of our lives. Yet I didn't have any moments of doubt. I was unusually calm before the gig. It felt good."

When they were announced as the headline act there was some scepticism at the time, but as Emily Eavis, the festival organiser, said, "it really blew people's minds".

The bass guitar player from Muse recently revealed that the band will start work on their new album without their lead singer-songwriter.

In an interview with the Sun, Chris Wolstenholme revealed that Matt Bellamy will be taking a break from his music commitments as he readies himself for life as a dad.
