A museum has discovered a lost collection of antique music instruments stored deep beneath its floors and forgotten.

The music instruments, which span four centuries and over 20 countries, were discovered by chance after the Cincinnati Museum hired a consultant to help it evaluate and catalogue its collection of instruments.

Some of the music instruments include a Ruckers virginal (similar to a keyboard), a 19th century African drum, a Turkish harp and a 17th century Amati viola.

Speaking to the Republic newspaper, J Kenneth Moore, curator in charge of the Musical Instruments Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, said: "You don't find these things in many places; you just find them in a handful of places.

"It's something that, I think, should be put on display and should be appreciated by Cincinnatians, and people who visit your city. It should be a point of pride."

It is believed that many of the instruments came to the museum courtesy of William Howard Doane, a 19th century wealthy industrialist who had a passion for collecting musical items.

Some of the instruments are said to be in good condition but others have suffered because of the poor conditions they have been kept in.
