Music 'has healing power'

Every genre of music can have an invigorating effect on human beings, one composer believes.

People who play instruments as diverse as the guitar, keyboards or trombone could be helping their audience to feel better.

According to Irish composer John Browne, the man behind the hip-hop interpretation of Don Giovanni, the healing power of music is well documented and readily experienced.

Speaking to the Times, he said music has this effect because different parts of the brain are related to different tones.

"You're recreating synapses between parts of the brain, invigorating mood and the life force," he commented.

Mr Browne said different tones, tunes and rhythms can invoke a healing response in people of any age or background.

"Classical for you, punk rock for another," he stated.

This comes after researchers at Duke University in the US found a number of tonal similarities between human speech and music.

The university said this is why major chords can sound happy, while minor chords can sound sad.
