Music helping unlock the past

Music helps unlock the past for Day Centre users

Music is being used to help people unlock memories from their past at a Day Centre in the north-east of England.

Service users, at the St John Ambulance Centre in Ashington, will be given the opportunity to take part in Musical Memories sessions to explore forgotten memories and remember the past as well as experience therapeutic benefits.

Assisted by professional folk musicians from the Live Music Charity, an organisation which delivers music projects across the UK, local people will be guided through five musical sessions designed to reflect the interests of the participants, reported the News Post Leader.

Fiddle player Chris Meredith and accordionist Amy Thatcher, who will also perform as part of the sessions, will encourage people to play music instruments, make music, and produce written poetry to accompany their trips down memory lane.

Speaking to the newspaper, Linda Scarr, manager of the Day Centre, said: “Sometimes it can be difficult for some of our service users to communicate with others, but Musical

Memories will help them to relax, laugh and in many cases will trigger a memory or past experience which they will wish to share.

At the end of the short project, participants will treat their family and friends to a performance of their musical creations.

Many care homes across the UK use music therapy as a way of reminding residents about their pasts and trying to prompt memories.
